Zesco United recovered from a 3-0 humiliation at the hands of Angola’s Libolo to settle for a 1-all draw against Smouha of Egypt in the CAF Confederation Cup. The Ndola side traveled in the Egyptian northern city confident of victory but still managed an important away point. Striker Jackson Jesse Were’s shot registered Zesco’s goal which deflected off an opponent’s defender seven minutes from time. However, the hosts did not want to give in easily forcing a penalty in the final minutes of the match. Defender David Owino Odhiambo conceded an infringement for the referee to point to the spot. Smouha’s Badu Diawara stepped up to send Jacob Banda in the wrong direction for an equalizer that came in the 88th minutes. Zesco move to 7 points in second place 24 hours before leaders Al Hilal Elobied take on Desportivo de Libolo, a match that could change the complexion of Group C after five matches. The Young African Leaders Intiative YALI says in the spirit of reconciliation incarcerated UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema should be put under house arrest. Speaking when he featured on Radio Christian Voice on Friday, YALI President Andrew Ntwewe said Hakainde Hichilema was not an ordinary citizen but a leader of the biggest opposition party in the country hence the need to be put under house arrest. He said political bickering has put the country on stand still and that the President should consider asking the courts to put HH under house arrest as a gesture that he was willing to reconcile the nation. Ntwewe said President Lungu was the most powerful individual in the country and that he must use the power wisely. He further Mr Ntwewe explained that what his organisation was calling for was for the opposition leader to go through the due process of the law but that we as a country should also be cognizant of the fact that Mr Hichilema was a leader with followers. He said the opposition have an agenda to ensure that he fails in most areas of governance so that they can use his failures as a campaign tool in 2021 but it was up to him to ensure that he moves away from politicking to delivering on the promises he made during the campaign. And Ntwewe says the President is living under the shadow of his late predecessor hence failing to admit the challenges he inherited. He said President Lungu found a crippled economy destroyed under the leadership of PF founding father Michael Sata but that he has failed to tell the nation the main challenges he found because he doesn’t want to upset the PF support base. Meanwhile, Ntwewe has called for the axing of minister in charge of youths and sports for what he termed “the mediocre way he is running the ministry.” He said Moses Mawere was inept and that he has massively underperformed in a ministry that should look after over 52% of the country’s population. He said the ministry Mawere is presiding over was a serious ministry which needs someone who understands the challenges youths are facing and is able to offer practical solutions. And Ntwewe has called for inclusiveness from those in power in the the governance of the country saying President Lungu should take a leaf from late third republican President Levy Mwanawasa who won by 29% but managed to unity the country during his first term. He said though President Lungu won by more than 50% he should realise that over 45 percent did not vote for him hence should strive to include them in the developmental agenda of the nation. TAYALI, to me you are just another sexist commentator; like many men when dataless, you base the arguments I raise on prejudicial, stereotypical discrimination of a woman and choose to discourse with me at that level. Before I dive into your poor analogy of the economic state of the nation in relation to it’s debt let me correct you. Darling it’s called Mac Powder and not Mark Powder as you remarked in your sexist comment towards me? That clarified let me introduce you to an intellectual discourse based on facts and referencing. *THE ZAMBIAN ECONOMY* *_By Tilyenji Mwanza_* Against all odds politically President Edgar Chagwa Lungu became republican president of this great nation. He came in with a vision to accomplish something started by his predecessor and clearly this is not easy as can be seen from the many abandoned projects by previous regimes. However, when he took over the reigns of power he also inherited for lack of better terms a bankrupt government; Inflation was high at around 20%, the copper prices had hit there lowest world over, an El Nino induced lower harvest a weak currency trading at K13 against the US dollar. Power crisis characterised our days as the word load shedding became our daily verb, this hampered production in all economic sectors. Fast track to date 29th June, 2017 inflation as of May release by the Central Statistic Office was at 6.5%, the Kwacha has strengthened and as of close of business today was at a buying rate of K9.27 and selling rate of K9.35. And yes let’s blame this on ba Lungu too he has caused this to happen. Making reference to the economic brief by the World Bank Group, June 2017, the economic growth which had fallen to 2.9% in 2015 has increased to 3.4% in 2016 and further the World Bank projects it to increase to 4.1% in 2017 coupled with a stable Kwacha. Our debt levels remain elevated not because of President Lungu this is due to large persistent fiscal deficits between 2012 and 2016 and a currency shock. But why did I decide to talk about the inflation and all, when you are talking about debt simple; The better the economy the more able you are to repay your debt. We already have a much stable economy and a higher GDP projection and an increase in domestic revenue collection ZRA for example already announced that it had exceeded their operational target, soon we will check with RTSA, NRFA, and Land Tax. I wonder what economics you applied to calculate the K10 000 but I will apply English, simple mathematics and something called knowledge and understanding. When government contracts loans the repayment of the debt is not a once off payment, the payments are done over a period of time what we call grace periods. As noted these amounts are not paid as a lump sum, after my inquisition with ministry of finance for example this year government is required to make a payment of less than $300 million to it’s debt accumulation. Our GDP is standing at just over $26 billion so how is it that government will fail to service a loan repayment of $300 million. As you make your debt analysis repayments, dear brother take into consideration two important facets look at the repayment per annum and secondly the currencies which the debts are in. And Tayali do not join the band wagon of creating false alarm and panic in people knowing very well that you are an opinion leader just to gain some political relevance or expedience. And Tayali darling I ain’t just a pretty face best recognise, and correction look at me I do not need Mac Powder to slay am just not your average Diva. I wine and dine books and thrive on knowledge, I do not seek to balance my information coverage but I look for the truth and that you need to know. That’s why I laugh at nincompoops who choose to call me dull and fail to even spell the word dull or uneducated they intend reduce to sexiest discourse of insults, ‘Am so over that.’ Before I forget let me attempt to educate you on the importance of the regional integration and diplomacy as that you also chose to belittle, something that President Lungu has revived in the country and rekindled. Zambia has a strategic geographic location that needs to be exploited as was observed in the 1970s the location of Zambia during that period was for me ‘regional super power’ so why not regain this position. Secondly it has been observed by Intratex Africa trade that Africa trades over 88% with the World and only 12% with itself a position that the continent has agreed to strive to change and this can only be achieved by enhanced bilateral relationships. And really I fail to understand Zambians you had been hell bent on criticising President Lungu for visiting other states with complaints that he had not witnessed reciprocal visits, now that the country is having such you want to complain, come on guys. And for me it puts one thing clear, this perception of tension in the country to rest. The post Tilyenji Calls Tayali Sexist; Challenges Opposition Leader appeared first on Zambia Reports.

Zambia’s Fourth Republican President Rupiah Bwezani Banda has paid tribute to the late Sir Ketumile Quett Masire of Botswana. According to a statement by Zambian press press secretary at the Botswana High Commission, President Banda described Sir Masire as a gifted Statesman whose dedication to Africa will forever be committed to the most important chapters of the continent’s history. President Banda, who is also representing President Edgar Lungu at the funeral of Botswana’s forefather, fondly recollected events that Sir Ketumile Masire inspired. “He was a simple person, a very wonderful African. When you lose a man as great as President Masire, you must sit and reflect what it is that he told you, what it is that he did for the country and the things that he achieved. So that those of us who are coming after him should always look at him as a role model, like we have our Dr. Kaunda and here you have President Masire and Sir Seretse Khama,” the former Zambian Head of State said. He further hailed President Masire’s immense contribution to the growth of the numerous African institutions of governance that still stand strong today. President Banda named the Southern African Development Community (SADC) as one of the most illustrious contributions to the political development of Southern Africa that the late Head of State tirelessly worked hard for. “He was an extremely well educated person, very articulate and great thinker. Many of the things we created as Africans, the various institutions of development, in this region and in Africa. He and our President Kaunda, were the brains behind this, all of us who came behind them looked up to them for guidance as to how we organise ourselves, that time we had issues of Independence for many African countries, these men played a great role” he said. The senior Zambian Statesman is in Botswana on behalf of President Edgar Lungu to pay his last respects to Sir Ketumile Quett Masire, who passed away in Gaborone on Thursday evening. President Banda was received by Zambia’s High Commissioner to Botswana, Brig. Gen. Patrick R. Tembo, Defence Attaché Col. Joseph Chewe and other senior Mission officials accredited to Botswana. He is accompanied by his Deputy Administrative Assistant Chibeza Mfuni. The post RB In Botswana To Mourn Sir Ketumile Quett Masire appeared first on Zambia Reports.

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu says he has no intent to change the Copperbelt leadership at district or provincial level. Taking cognizant of calls by Chishimba Kambwili demanding the dismissal of Provincial minister Bowman Lusambo, the head of state upon arrival in Ndola today gave comfort to the Copperbelt PF leadership when he noted that he had no intention to change them. The head of state further assured them of his protection and guidance but cautioned them that they are on probation. President Lungu also emphasised the need for unity in the party. “When you are divided your enemies are very happy,” he cautioned. “When there is bickering in the family your enemies rejoice and jubilate.” He advised the Copperbelt leadership to be wary of those trying to cause confusion, noting that they are after their jobs or looking to replace them with people who will be gullible.
