British High Commissioner Fergus Cochrrane-Dyet has blamed his blamed his social media troubles on media manipulation. A subdued Dyet fell back on his hard hitting anti-government tweets that have landed him in trouble with government. Foreign Affairs Minister Joe Malanji summoned Dyet for a talk over with the British envoy softening his stance. “The relationship between the British government and government of Zambia is a good one and a very good, his office and mine are nearby, if there is an issue he can call and we discuss†said Dyet. “The way it originates (online publication) is to distort information very much in order to cause a roar, my tweets have been manipulated by punctuation to suggest that I was associated the Minister of information Dora Siliya, which was not correct†he said. The British envoy however, maintained that corruption levels in Zambia are alarming and have a potential to reduce investor confidence to international firms intending to invest in Zambia. “There is corruption in this country and quite serious and the government is tackling that and that information that the minister has shared with me is re-assuring and very welcome, high corruption levels are eroding investor confidence†said Dyet. “Freedom of the media and you know the UK and the rest of the European Union, we believe very passionate about the freedom of the media, freedom expression. However, there are responsibilities on Journalists and I think it is important for media personnel to act responsibly in order to avoid tarnishing the image of the media in Zambia†he said. And Mr. Malanji has assured the High commissioner that systems are in place to ensure that corrupt activities are addressed because no responsible government takes pride in the misuse of its national resources. “There is no president who can say corruption must come on board when he knows that is a cancer, whichever country you go to corruption is a cancer. It goes the opposite direction of development. It is only prudent that Freedom of expression must not be abused, because very soon the Law will catch up with you,†said MalanjiI. Vice president Inonge Wina has said that the management of the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) overstepped its mandate when it released the trends report for 2017 to the general public before availing such intelligence information to law enforcement agencies. Wina was speaking in parliament this morning during the Vice President’s Question Time where she said that the conduct of the Financial Intelligence Centre seems to indicate that the centre has a different agenda away from the original role. “Mr. Speaker, Government agencies such the FIC should not dance to the gallery, it handles very national matters, and this country has to deal with matters of anti-terrorism financing, money laundering, tax evasion and all these are very secretive matters†she said. She said that the authorities will not encourage institutions created by the government to begin to operate outside prescribed terms of reference. “And for the investigative wings to report to the public before reporting to the investigative wings show that something is amiss, it clearly indicates that FIC has crossed its boundaries†added Wina .   The post Wina Takes a Dig at FIC appeared first on Zambia Reports.

Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Bright Nundwe has threatened to spill the beans on shadowy dealings over the controversial Black Mountain in Kitwe. Nundwe made the threats when he announced the suspension of operations at the Black Mountain in the aftermath of the 10 deaths of illegal miners. He said much as the accident that claimed 10 lives after the mountain collapsed, it would have been avoidable had safety measures been put in place by the group that operated there. “I am a reserved person, if you see me talking that means there is something…you will not see me reacting anyhow like a fool, no I don’t operate like that. I don’t want to see anybody touching this mountain, not even the police officers, don’t even go closer to it,” Nundwe said. He said, “There was deficiency in our preparations, initially operations shouldn’t even have started, you look at the frequency of machines coming no one can go at the apex of the mountain and start operating and someone is below here? And theY should start monitoring here..get involved as well,” Nundwe further said the accident at the black mountain was a collective responsibility and no individual needed to be blamed. “Let me tell you, I have not been given the spirit of timidity or fear I have the boldness to make sure I curb the situation in this province, I want to repeat that Copperbelt should not just be known for illegal things,” he said. And when asked about why operations continued at the Black Mountain with safety concerns still lingering,”There are certain things where when senior people are mute you need to be mute as well”.
