Former ZANASU Vice-President Prince Ndoyi says the opposition UPND is ‘irretrievably on a shameless mission of embarrassment.’ Commenting on the trip by UPND’s top brass who visited South Africa’s opposition leader Julius Malema, Ndoyi said the UPND have turned themselves into a political is now shooting in all directions for political relevance internationally. He noted that as opposed to visiting opposition political parties abroad the UPND leadership should have taken advantage of the visits by the three Presidents who have visited the country in the last two months and asked for audience if indeed their motive is to find someone to mediate for them regarding the incarceration of their leader. Below is the full statement as Mr Ndoyi. We want to comment on the trip by the UPND leadership to visit South Africa’s opposition leader CIC Julius Malema. It is worrisome the amount of desperation we are witnessing from the UPND in the last few months. This is yet another failed desperate attempt to try and set a stage for themselves into international politics, as well as set a tone to portray themselves as though they have grown into international politics. The UPND must not rob Malema of the integrity he holds among South Africans. UPND are irretrievably on a shameless mission of embarrassment. They have turned themselves into a political lose cannon, shooting in all directions for help, even from places and individuals that nobody in the world would consider. Their actions in the past months are a thorn in the flesh of people that laid the foundations of politics in our country, people like Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe, Mainza Chona and others. We can’t imagine for a bit, if Anderson Mazoka were to rise today to see what his party has been reduced to, evidenced from the political immaturity they are exhibiting. We urge the EFF not to stoop low to the levels of UPND, who in their desperation called a stooge of Hellen Zille, Mmusi Maimane to try and gain political sympathy from the international community. The move failed because Zambians from the onset understand the interests of Hellen Zille, Mmusi Maimane and their Democratic Alliance(DA) party. Infact these are some of things President Lungu mentioned during the Press Conference that there a number of business men who want to usurp political power in Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe and our country. We are of the view that the move by the UPND somewhat exposes them and vindicates the President, and Zambians should be weary of these moves. We urge the EFF who represent the genuine interests of South Africans not to fall into the trap of the UPND. The EFF practices practical and logical politics, and they would be dammed if they began courting a political party that is hell bent on polarizing their own country. It is surprising that the UPND has no friendship with any sitting head of state, but have gone on rampage meeting opposition political parties. Their aspirations for leadership and national office do not represent the interests of the indigenous Zambian people, but those of the opposition political parties in South Africa and we are confident no jokes that Zambians could not be fooled in that direction. The UPND have entered a Political mode destructive; not only to themselves, but to the nation at large. They no longer represent the values and rich heritage upon which the Zambian politics was established. Lastly, if the UPND are genuinely looking for people to mediate over the incarceration of their president HH, they should have taken the opportunity to talk to Presidents who have visited the country. In the last two months, we have received three Heads Of States and we are sure President Lungu would have taken heed of any advise coming from any of the three regarding their issues. Our advise is let themcalm down and genuinely reconcile their actions over the last months with the Zambian people. Issued by; Prince J. UPND vice president Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has broken his silence in the aftermath of the proclamation of the existence of a situation likely to lead to a public emergency. Mwamba, popularly known as GBM, has labelled the move as dictatorial and pre-determined by the PF leadership. Below is his full statement: 09.07.2017 PRESS STATEMENT STATE OF EMERGENCY DESIGNED TO SILENCE OPPOSITION AND CRITICS Country men and women, Edgar Lungu’s invocation of the Threatened State of Emergence is unnecessary and constitutes abuse of power designed to silence his critics and kill democracy and human rights in our beautiful land. It is clear that his actions are premeditated and designed to strengthen the hand of dictatorship. There are adequate laws in Zambia which can be used to deal with any crime. Cases of arson can easily be dealt with under the Penal Code and other relevant pieces of legislation. They do not require a State of emergency to arrest arsonists. What is required at this stage is for the police to undertake a thorough investigation and bring the culprits to book while ensuring that the Local authorities and Disaster Management Unit assist those affected by the fires to start a new life. What is surprising is that even before investigations are concluded, Edgar Lungu and his officials Inonge Wina , Mwakalombe, stephen Kampyongo and Mumbi Phiri have already predetermined this case and the investigation may neither be thorough nor genuine. It was also shocking that Lungu could accuse the opposition of being behind these acts of arson claiming they want to compel him and PF to hold negotiations and form a government of national unity. To begin with, UPND has never sought and asked for discussions with PF for a Government of National Unity and we challenge him and the entire PF leadership to prove to the nation that UPND expressed interest to form a Government of National Unity. UPND has never and will never seek a government of national unity with a dictatorial regime. Lungu should show leadership for once and tell the nation where he got this fake information he is using to accuse the opposition of being behind the fires. If it is from the police, then he must fire his police command for incompetence or apologise to the nation. It is surprising that Lungu jumped to conclusions about the fires and other acts of arson without proper investigations and rushed to declare a threatened state of emergency. We believe that the declaration of a state of emergency is not in public interest but in PF interest. The State of emergency was schemed by the PF government a long time ago. For example, in April this year Edgar Lungu warned while he was in Livingstone that he would bring a State of emergency if violence and vandalism continued. When the church mother bodies raised very cardinal issues regarding the current state of the nation and called for dialogue as a way to resolve certain matters, Lungu didn’t just decline the invitation to meet the church leaders, but made derogatory remarks about the church mother bodies and immediately rubbished their well-meaning biblical guidance by saying everything was just fine in the country and that is why he was flying around the world and other Heads of States were visiting Zambia. Lungu demeaned the clergy by accusing them that tension only existed in their heads and that they were just pleasing their pay masters. This was another clear indication that he was well aware of his plans to take the country into such a situation of state of emergency. If there is no tension in the country, why has Lungu declared a threatened state of emergency? We are also wondering why the state is ignoring evidence coming from the scenes of crime. There is video evidence of testimonies from eye witnesses who revealed that the Lusaka City market was gutted shortly after being opened when the Zambia Police and Lusaka City Council officials went in to clean the premises. That has been ignored and threats have instead continued being issued away from the tips needed in investigations. We are also fully aware that it’s not long ago when PF cadres openly revealed that they would be helping the Zambia Police stationed at the market in offering security to the city market and public places in Lusaka and other areas. Shortly after the market was gutted, even before any investigations were carried out by relevant security wings, PF leadership such as Home Affairs Minister Steven Kampyongo, Lusaka Province Minister Japhen Mwakalombe, PF Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri and later Vice-President Inonge Wina were all over making insinuations that some people who want to grab power were behind the spate of fires and sabotage in the country. Attached to this document is what Stephen Kampyongo and Mwakalombe said when they addressed victims at the Market shortly after fire broke out. Later Lungu also went to the same market and openly said he would take decisions that he would not care about being labelled as a dictator as he would limit civil liberties for people. How did they know the criminals without investigations? The next day, Lungu addressed a special cabinet meeting where they resolved to invoke article 31 of the Zambian Constitution which is basically a proclamation of the Threatened State of Emergency. In his Press Conference, Lungu finally revealed the real reasons why the country was in the current state of affairs ; which is that there was a stalemate resulting from the contentious August 2016 elections. This is the root of the political crisis . The anger we are seeing from the PF and its government as well as the scheme to introduce dictatorship through the state of emergency and the incarceration of HH emanates from the disputed 2016 presidential elections. From the trend of events and going by what we have read in history, any citizen should have no doubt that the PF leadership is out to wipe out any form of dissent in the country and fully cement what has now been widely quoted by both local and international media and bodies that Zambia under the PF regime has slumped into dictatorship. The solution lies in resolving issues connected to the 2016 contentious elections. As at now, we insist on the speedy release of our incarcerated UPND President Hakainde Hichilema and his co-accused plus other political prisoners who are in detention over trumped up charges. We will continue pursuing all the legal, civilized and peaceful means as a way to achieve meaningful political and economic development of our country. We also believe that the quickest way to achieving and resolving the current impasse is for the courts of law to urgently dispose of the outstanding cases such as our right to be heard in the High Court over our presidential petition. We also wish to argue that if the country goes ahead with this proclamation of the Threatened State of emergency, it is no doubt that innocent Zambians will be arrested on mere suspicion just to fulfil the Patriotic Front’s political agenda to remain in power forever at all costs. I wish to point out that the solution to end existing tension in the country does not lie in using state institutions against those with dissenting views but to engage all political players around the table. There is need for dialogue. We therefore call upon all patriotic citizens to defend our democracy. Issued by GEOFFREY BWALYA MWAMBA UPND VICE PRESIDENT. It has been very easy to climb on top of the mountain and proclaim that the declaration of a situation leading to a state of public emergency is dictatorial. But a closer look at the events leading to this action, to the less subjectively informed would have suggested that something needed to be done sooner or later. For a long time incidences have been happening with no clarity on their nature whether they have been just careless acts of vandalism or acts of political intimidation meant to arm twist the powers that be to act in a manner pleasing to the alleged perpetrators. A lot has been said about some damage and fire being natural acts. When fire sets out on a court room in Kanyama and Kabwe in similar fashion and also the same happens to educational offices in Kafue. Add to this the number of markets that have been torched with no arrests made but with a seemingly clear pattern of criminality, then someone has to think beyond it being just mere coincidences. And to think of the mother of all disasters, at least in so far as this arson laced tale of City Market goes, then it becomes clear that someone had to act. The acts of doing damage to Zesco pylons were just testimony of how daring the acts were getting. The vandalism acts have been getting more daring by the passage of time with the suspected attempt to torch the Lusaka Central Prison being one such act. Are the authorities therefore to just standby and applaud the growing senselessness of these acts? Did they expect that the authorities will wait until an attempt to torch State House is made before they could act? So what was the chief protector of this beautiful country we call home to do? Lie down and take the slaps! Admittedly the law enforcement agencies have been less helpful. Had they cared to go about investigating these suspected crimes before a disaster of the blowing of City Market took place, there could have been no whispers of a prospective State of Emergency. The action is also a warning to the law enforcement agencies to come up with something worth their title. But we pray that this does not turn into a witch hunt aimed at merely appeasing the commissioners of the situation likely to cause a state of public emergency. It should be expected that in the spirit the proclamation was made to find the perpetrators of the alleged criminal acts the law enforcement agencies should deliver the goods. Otherwise the whole situation leading up to state of public emergency would have been a sham. The citizenry would have been robbed of their precious freedoms for nothing. We all pray this chapter is buried and the alleged perpetrators caged. Did anyone really expect the Head of State to be handing out medals for any reckless act reported around the country? While a heavy handed approach may not be the best idea, some action of some sort had to be taken. The post Opinion: A Look At The “Semi State Of Emergency” appeared first on Zambia Reports.

Soccer fans are not letting off their demand for a match between the U-20 and senior national team with the City Market disaster presenting an opportunity for their fantasy to be fulfilled. Fans are circulating a poster staking a possible clash between the U-20 and the Chipolopolo for raising funds for the rebuilding of the gutted City Market. The poster also proposes that the match will help compensate the people that lost property in the inferno. Since the U-20 flew high at the Africa Cup and also at the FIFA World Cup some fans have idealistically been calling for the team to be wholesomely elevated to the senior team. The romance for the U-20 may not even show up in the dream match as the absence of the players that the public adores in Patson Daka, Enock Mwepu, Fashion Sakala and Edward Chilufya may not be as top billing as the public want it to be. The Football Association of Zambia has yet to respond to the widely circulating demand. The post Fans Flaunt U-20 Versus Seniors Charity Match appeared first on Zambia Reports.
