There is something eerily disturbing about the company President Edgar Lungu enjoys keeping. Questions have been popping up about whether Zambia is sliding into a dictatorship but there are still a lot of misgivings about whether that is the case or not. Those more inclined to the ruling Patriotic Front and understandably closer to the privilege that of belonging to the ruling class have forcefully rebutted any insinuations that Zambia is a dictatorship. The less inclined to the ruling party have also been hitting hard at spreading word that Zambia is turning into a dictatorship feasting on any foreign write ups condemning happenings in Zambia. For the neutrals it has been even harder to endorse any of the two extremes but the carelessness with which government has gone about business despite the many warnings to check where they are taking Zambia to presents a strong case that someone has to stop and reflect. It has not helped that President Edgar Lungu has been indifferent to everything that is happening around him. It could appear that he has crafted a Mahati ma Ghandi like image of himself and does not care what everyone around him says. Not too long ago a little advice from the three church mother bodies sent him ballistic without taking as much a glance to the matters being raised. Perhaps more determined to set on this self destructive trajectory that has seen him keep company with the most reviled dictators on the continent. Just do a checklist on the people that President Lungu keeps company with Zimbabwean ‘life President’ top of his list while Ugandan long serving leader Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is also revered by the Zambian Head of State. Not too long ago we had Togolese president Faure Gnassimbe given royal treatment with that country’s democratic credentials a well known story. Now we have Paul Kagame another whose democratic credentials are not exactly on anyone’s list. Never mind what they tell you about how much loved he is. All dictators are ‘loved’ until the fall. Is this a case of birds of a feather? The post OPINION: President Lungu’s Love Affair for Africa’s Big Men appeared first on Zambia Reports.
