President of Zambia Edgar Lungu has assured Congolese refugees fleeing civil unrest in the Democratic Republic of Congo of government’s support and protection. The Head of State was speaking when he visited the Kenani refugee camp in Nchelenge yesterday. President Lungu says Zambia will continue caring and showing compassion to people that found its boundaries a safe place. “We have demonstrated in the past and continue to do so by keeping our boarders open.” He said. President Lungu admitted that hosting refugees would put a strain on the national budget urging the international community to join in mobilising resources for the new communities being created. “All indicators are that the situation is getting worse. As we prepare to move the new refugees from Kenani to a new permanent site, there is need for the international community to move to greater action to sustain and augment the efforts that my Government, with support of its partners, has made so far to stabilise the situation,” he said. President Lungu praised traditional leaders and the community in Chiengi and Nchelenge districts for welcoming the refugees into their areas. The Head of State urged the refugees to feel at home and promised that his government would do everything humanly possible to make their stay as comfortable as possible. Over 6, 000 Congolese refugees are being hosted at the 56 – hectare site in transit to a permanent site with the support from the UN Refugee Agency – UNHCR and the Government of Zambia. The MP has purchased 14 Bhajaj Tricycles also known as Auto Rickshaws for distribution eight wards in his constituency. Sampa says this is a form of empowerment to local residents. “I will distribute them to the eight wards in my Constituency to help with Party mobilization and equally help our needy members in different ways to alleviate poverty as they will also be used as taxis,” he told PF media. “The Bhajaj tricycle can also be modified for business use as mobile selling platforms.” Sampa also notes that Auto Rickshaws, which is synonymous with the transport in India and seemingly part of that country’s identity, use less fuel as compared to normal automobiles. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Party has claimed that it has taken over part of the structures from the Patriotic Front in different parts of the Copperbelt due to its popularity. Party National Youth Chairperson Charles Kabwita has said Patriotic Front officials from different parts of the country are freely joining the NDC in which most of them have gone ahead to form structures. He said the recently registered political party has continued to receive support and will continue to welcome those frustrated with the governance system of the Patriotic Front. “We are on top of things. The response we are receiving from the general public is overwhelming, and it has become easy for us to form structures,†Kabwita said. “The formation of structures is actually being done by the people themselves and bringing the structures to us, and they are telling us, we are so many and we felt we could form a branch in our area. In NDC the simplest exercise is to put up structures.†Kabwita, a former Ward Councillor for Chimwemwe under the Patriotic Front, said it was difficult to form structures in the PF adding that NDC has attracted a good number people with less than six months in existence. “Our role is to kick out the Patriotic Front and bring hope for the people that have remained hopeless under the current regime; our people need food on their table to survive,†he said. Kabwita said the party has continued with the recruitment of members in all parts of the country in readiness for the 2021 elections.
