Copperbelt’s largest trading site Chisokone Market has been shut to allow for cleaning as one of the measures to avert a major cholera outbreak in Kitwe. Kitwe District Commissioner Binwell Mpundu and Kitwe Mayor Christopher Kang’ombe have taken charge of the cleaning exercise with the help of the Zambia Army, Zambia National Service, Kitwe City Council and Market and Street Vendor Association. However, the situation has left marketeers stranded with no hope of continuing their business activities for the next few days. Those talked to complained that the move has turned majority of them into destitutes and will have a negative impact on the country’s economy. They said authorities should have restricted areas that are a risk as opposed to shutting down the entire market. “We all support the efforts being made by our leaders but this one will not only affect us as marketeers but the economy as well. How many people are turning away after finding that the market is closed? That is all money, I also don’t know how they expect us to survive with this situation,†Astridah Zulu, a marketeer at Chisokone, said. She has appealed to authorities to speed up the cleaning exercise and allow business to continue. “The longer this cleaning process goes, the more we are affected as marketeers. So, they should also consider how we will survive as marketeers, just one day of not trading you have no idea how much has been lost,†She added. And Street Vendors Foundation Representative Paul Mambwe said the exercise will help prevent an outbreak of the disease in the market. “We are lucky that not even a case has been recorded here but obviously we must sustain that otherwise we would end up losing lives. All of us should be concerned because this is for our own good,†he added. Meanwhile, Kitwe District Commissioner Binwell Mpundu has disclosed that the cases of cholera reported in Kitwe still stand at three and efforts are still being made to avoid further outbreaks. President Edgar Lungu today took time to visit cholera patients at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka. The Head of State is optimistic Zambia will overcome the epidemic which has ravaged the country killing more than 60 people and afflicting thousands. “Earlier today, I visited Cholera patients that have been admitted in the Cholera Centre at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka. “I am optimistic that the measures put in place by my Government are adequate to contain the deadly disease. My Government under the Ministry of Health will further come up with long term measures to provide clean drinking water to our people. “I will ensure that we as a nation will dedicate a day in every month to clean our surrounding. This will help improve hygiene and fight other waterborne diseases including #Cholera,” he said. And a political commentator Bright Kaluba says opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema should learn from President Lungu’s strategy. “HH afwile asambililako ifi. ECL is the worst leader Zambia has ever had to an extent that all the electorates have resolved not to vote for him in 2021,” he writes on social media. “However, with the kind of opposition leaders we have…he may just play around here and there and find himself back. He may steal billions of dollars and kwacha visibly (unverified allegations) – but with proper propaganda – the electorates may just vote for him again. “Today he will be shown on TV visiting cholera patients. He will equally appear in newspaper. To the majority – he is taking a risk. To me – this is normal. Naine kuti nayako kulya kwine nga bansuminisha…. #StopCholera #StayAlive,” states Kaluba. Radical Revolutionary Party president Vincent Chaile says the newly introduced tax on imported motor vehicle is outrageous. Chaile says the Patriotic Front government was milking the goat to feed a cow in their new structure. “For the first time in my political career, [I] have agreed with the NDC political consultant Chishimba Kambwili that [the] PF govt is very unrealistic to increase duty on imported vehicles. “What the PF govt is doing is milking the goat to feed the cow. This is day light robbery. PF should know that governments worldwide are formed with a sole purpose of simplifying the lives the lives of its people,” he said. Chaile says the tax increase will hurt the poor majority and perpetuate suffering among Zambians. “You can only increase such satanic fees if only you are trying to discourage people from importing used vehicles as a way of promoting new vehicles manufactured locally… like it is a case in South Africa,” he said. Chaile has urged the government to reconsider reversing it’s decision on car duty or face a serious backlash from many Zambians.
