Not too long ago, I read that the Health Professional Council of Zambia closed Fairview Hospital in Lusaka for endangering the lives of patients. HPCZ cited abnormalities at the institution among them stocking and dispensing of expired drugs. Well, yesterday afternoon my three year old daughter was taken to Chilenje mini hospital with severe cough and flu and the health personnel dispensed some Cefuroxime Axetil for oral suspension USP and further gave a prescription of two other drugs which were not in stock, Panaldo syrup and Triphen expectorant. On their way back home, my daughter’s mother noticed that this Cefuroxime Axetil that was administered was actually expired. She decided to dash back to the hospital to be given none expired drugs and guess what? It was discovered all the Cefuroxime Axetil that Chilenje mini Hospital has in stock is expired. Could this be an isolated incident or this is the reality in most of our health posts across the country? One only wonders as to how many of these expired drugs have found their way in patients’ bodies. Could the stories we read about not too long ago that the government of the Republic of Zambia had procured expired drugs worth millions of dollars be true? I urge all of you who seek medical attention from both government and private hospitals to be vigilant. Katwishi Bwalya when I insisted during our chat that despite me not being on the ground, I have better informers who are on the ground and keep me posted on the happenings, this is what I meant. So please get down to work. Go and point that microphone in that government official’s face and let them explain why Chilenje mini hospital has in stock expired drugs and is dispensing them to unsuspecting patients. His CV is rich. He was no doubt that towering figure with an imposing presence for his country. He represented Chipolopolo with pride. Together with the late Harrison ‘Wawa’ Chongo formed the best central defence on the continent in 1994. He once was ferried in a private jet to join Chipolopolo from his club in Saudi Arabia. Elijah Litana was a member of Zambia’s silver medalists at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia. He scored the opener with screaming header. Nigeria’s Emmanuel Amunike came off the bench to cancel the lead. Today, this is the sight of our hero. He is now based in lambaland, Kafulafuta to be precise. The man we once celebrated. What could have gone wrong? The post Elijah Litana: 1994 Africa’s Best Central Defence Partner appeared first on Zambia Reports.
