The ‘memo’ on the public outcry on the theme song for the Under-20 Africa Cup has reached the Ministry of Sports who have defended the song that has been described as mediocre. A social media buzz hit the airwaves albeit in the regressive sense once the theme song had been released with the public dubbing it a boostele song. The approved theme song was done by JK, Wile and Mozegator but the public is rooting for the unofficial song song done by Nalu and Exile (now Izrael) that they reckon captures the spirit of the event. Ministry of Sports Director Bessie Chelemu told ZNBC’s Morning Live program that the song had impressed the Local Organizing Committee as it was representative of the event. “A lot of artistes were given the opportunity and they were given the criteria that the AfCON is about uniting the nations and the songs were given to the LOC,†Chelemu said. “It is not just about the beat but the message in the song. When you look at the theme song it starts about welcome to Zambia and there is also a part where there is French because there will be French speaking countries attending.†And Chelemu complained that there had been a lot of negative publicity around the AfCON from the local media. She said that despite the LOC doing a lot of things the media had focussed on the negative side of the publicity. Chelemu said that despite the LOC hosting a workshop for the media to orient them they still went ahead and published negative stories. “There has been a lot of negative publicity even after we engaged the media and held a workshop for them some of them who were part of that still went and published negative stories,†she said. Zambia is hosting the U-20 Africa Cup that kicks off on Sunday with the host playing Guinea in the opener. The junior Chipolopolo is in Group A with Egypt, Mali and Guinea while Group B has South Africa, Senegal, Cameroun and Sudan. Publicity around the event has been a subject of public debate with the public routinely blowing the whistle on the event.
