My good friend, my advise to you is to remain a citizen like myself. You are a more organised and effective opposition to government, than some of these family parties. You come from along way, you have an illustrious past and no one will take it away from you. We know that this country has presidents in every house because ECL seemed to have taken it easily and is losing popularity. Do not be fooled, the people know about your tax woes and will be saying, if he could steal from his company. Ngecha bonse? Government? My friend just chew what you’re left with. Veteran politician Vernon Johnson Mwaanga has described the expulsion of Cuban ambassador Nelson Pages Vilas as an extreme reaction which first struck him as a joke. Mwaanga says the decision was ill advised, extreme and inconsistent with what happened in the past. “Just in case memories have conveniently faded, in 2011 when PF held its Convention at Mulungushi Rock, they formally invited the then American Ambassador to Zambia, Mark Storella to attend, accompanied by a political affairs officer from the US embassy and while there, he announced that the United States of America, supports democratic developments, when ever they occur. “I was then a member of the MMD government of then President Rupiah Banda and no issue was made of Ambassador Storella’s attendance or remarks he made there,” said Mwaanga. BELOW IS A FULL STATEMENT Expulsion of the Cuban Ambassador to Zambia is an extreme over reaction. Statement by Dr Vernon J Mwaanga. When i first heard about the expulsion from the country of the Cuban Ambassador, for attending the launch of the Socialist Party and for the general public remarks of support, attributed to him, i thought it was a 1st April fools day joke. It has now turned out to be true and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been directed to work out the diplomatic channels to put this Presidential decision into effect. I hold no brief for what may have happened or said at the launch of the Socialist Party on Saturday 31st March and my views on Socialism in Zambia, are a matter of public record. This decision is ill advised, extreme and inconsistent with what happened in the Past. Just in case memories have conveniently faded, in 2011 when PF held its Convention at Mulungushi Rock, they formally invited the then American Ambassador to Zambia, Mark Storella to attend, accompanied by a political affairs officer from the US embassy and while there, he announced that the United States of America, supports democratic developments, when ever they occur. I was then a member of the MMD government of then President Rupiah Banda and no issue was made of Ambassador Storella’s attendance or remarks he made there. This decision to expel the Cuban Ambassador is extreme and uncalled for. At the most, he should have been summoned to the Foreign Ministry and given a demarche. It does not augur well for our relations with Cuba, a country which has been supportive of Zambia in good and bad times. FAZ has issued a statement claiming that the leaked financial documents showing irregular payments to executive committee committee members was a malicious social media campaign. FAZ spokesperson Desmond Katongo has advised Zambians to ignore the financial documents circulating claiming they are aimed at damaging the image of the association. Financial statements widely circulated online show FAZ officials benefiting in excess of K1.4 million in bonuses for work allegedly carried out to host the 2017 under-20 Africa Cup and the 2017 Cosafa under-17 tournaments. FAZ announced it will hold a press briefing tomorrow. BELOW IS THE FAZ STATEMENT FROM FAZ Press Statement (For Immediate Release) Football Association of Zambia Football House, Lusaka 01 April, 2018 FAZ REGRETS SOCIAL MEDIA ATTACKS, PROMOTES UNITY & FOCUS ON THE GAME, DEVELOPMENT We have noted with regret the deliberately propagated and malicious social media campaign to smear FAZ aimed at derailing the operations of Football House. We wish to advise the football fraternity and nation as a whole to ignore all manner of attacks aimed at the Football Association of Zambia with the contempt they deserve. In the immediate aftermath of the 31st March 2018 AGM, some known individuals resorted to publishing documents which they hoped could damage FAZ and ultimately put the name of Association and its entire executive under ridicule. The Association is aware of a sustained smear social media campaign by known individuals aimed at drawing Football House into endless mudslinging. We further wish to inform our members and the public that FAZ will not succumb to these malicious attacks. FAZ will in the course of this week hold a press briefing to offer some clarity on several issues. We wish to reiterate our commitment to the development of football and attaining the best and highest honours possible for Zambia. This we remain steadfast to do with the entire football family and people of Zambia in mind. This we remain resolute to undertake anchored on the platform of constructive consultations, accountability and transparency. These principles were demonstrable in our AGM on Saturday and going forward they remain a part of our day to day operations. In encouraging all members of the football family to embrace one another, love one another and work hard together as one large family, we invite all our members and every Zambian to focus their energies on supporting the enormous amount of work ahead of us in 2018/19 which include: • Running successful AFCON 2019 Qualifiers and competing at the finals tournament in Cameroon • Operationalizing FAZ offices across all 10 provinces • Rolling out a robust programme of technical development and capacity development programmes for the training and retraining of our administrators across the provinces, coaches and other technical stakeholders • Enhancing the competitiveness of our various football leagues and subsequently all national teams by entrenching club licensing in our football system which will secure the future of our game • Continuing with our engagement of various partners and stakeholders to bring more sponsors into the game • Rolling out provincial cup championships across the 10 provinces • Running successful qualifiers for the youth, junior as well as women national teams • Work to ensure provinces hold their assemblies at which they elect their representatives • Continuously pursue and undertake programmes that would enhance the financial standing of our football • Sustain the open door policy at Football House and continuously engage every member including those with any grievances so that whatever differences and opinions members and other stakeholders may have, these may be addressed and resolved amicably. News that Fred M’membe has thrown his hat in the political ring is hardly surprising. Over the years M’membe has been active as any political animal in this country. He has remote controlled some politicians hiding under the banner of the now defunct Post Newspapers. M’membe has used the cover of being a newspaper man to skin political opponents without any weaponry available to them to hit back. Inevitably M’membe suffered out of playing political games hiding behind the keyboard. Now he has discovered that he has to face his political demons head on. Given what he has gone through with his beloved Post Newspapers closed it was always going to be a long fight before he could throw his last arrow. He has used every imaginable defence mechanism from belting away propaganda, legal schemes and use of political surrogates like the now defunct Rainbow Party that amounted to nothing with Wynter Kabimba as the front. M’membe has inevitably come to the only conclusion that he was always going to come that he has to do the bidding himself. However, very soon he will learn how hard it is to survive in politics. He will have to learn to survive innuendos and outright insults. He has not been one to take criticism lightly despite having mastered the art of dishing it out to opponents over the years. Of course there is that awkward political obligation of dealing with hanger-on that regularly demand payment to champions your causes. M’membe is not exactly one who deeps into his pockets that easily. Naturally he will have to endure the brunt of a highly slanderous media, a weapon he thrived although in litigiously measured fashion. Now is when M’membe is going to learn that political life is far more different than just picking on political opponents behind the keyboard. How long he will survive could be only a matter posterity can judge. Credit to him and his followers they could be the only party with an ideology. Socialism has certainly some following across the globe but as to its practicalities under the modern day political circumstances in Zambia is anybody’s guess. We can only wish comrade Fred M’membe the very best on his new political journey that nature may have chosen for him. We could be wrong but this definitely has all the markings of the beginning of the end. Fred M’membe’s Socialist revolution has claimed its first casualty in Cuban Ambassador Nelson Pages Vilas who has been expelled by the Zambian government. Vilas has been expelled for having attended the launch of the Zambian Socialist Party and wished the opposition political party the best of luck. The presence of the Cuban envoy accredited to Zambia has not gone down very well with the Zambian government with Presidential spokesperson Amos Chanda making the announcement that Vilas had been shown the door. Chanda told a media briefing at Pamodzi Hotel that Vilas broke diplomatic etiquette by attending an opposition political party event. M’membe was unveiled as the Presidential candidate for the Socialist Party in the 2021 elections.
