Opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has added his voice in urging residents of Kanyama to desist from engaging to acts that will lead to the destruction of property and loss of life. Hichilema says the situation may be desperate, but there was no need to further complicate the situation. BELOW IS HICHILEMA’S IS STATEMENT Dear Citizens, We have received information that traders who were displaced from the streets and resident in Kanyama have run out of patience and protesting, demanding to get back their trading places so that they can continue earning a living. We fully understand the challenges that everyone is facing at this moment but we want to call for calm as together we identify lasting solutions to these challenges. Further, we call on every well meaning Zambian not to involve themselves in violent protests that would lead to death. May calm be restored in our country and we hope even those whose trading places have been declared prohibited throughout the country will not resort to violence but dialogue and identify lasting solutions. It is understood that people’s lives and livelihoods have been disturbed and its time the PF took this matter seriously. The solution to roadside trading is to designate an area for traders to conduct their business. God bless you all, God bless our country. HH. Opposition National Democratic Congress consultant Chishimba Kambwili has called for calm after residents of Lusaka’s Kanyama area took to the streets destroying property in protest of strict measures imposed on the community to avert the outbreak of cholera. Kambwili says Zambia is crumbling as a result of misplaced priorities and irresponsible leadership. “Cholera was first reported in October and if this was a serious government they would have taken preventive measures back then. “Now the poor are being punished because of an epidemic that is preventable. Instead of commissioning exorbitant priced roads and airports, as well as globe trotting and spending money on unnecessary things you could have prevented this by diverting that money into sanitation,” he says. Kambwili says the common man on the street is suffering. “The poor marketeers and street vendors are now suffering because they are hungry, their livelihoods have been taken away from them in a flash and there is nothing worse than a government that does not prioritise the poor people. “Riots are never the right way to air grievances but when you are hungry it becomes convenient to fight for your livelihood,” he says. Kambwili urged residents of Kanyama to calm down and wait for the right moment to react. The post Kambwili Calls For Calm After Kanyama Erupts appeared first on Zambia Reports.

Opposition FDD spokesperson Antonio Mwanza says the riot in Kanyama could have been avoided if only authorities were a little sensitive. Mwanza says putting Kanyama on lockdown with providing its resident an alternative smacked of the lack of common sense. “What the people of Kanyama need is not a curfew but clean water, decent sanitation, proper housing, proper drainages and conducive trading places,” he says in a social media post. “Just a little bit of sensitivity and common sense could have prevented the riots in Kanyama. “You can’t put a whole compound, with tens of thousands of people on lock down. First you take away their means of survival, then you impose a curfew on the entire population and somehow expect that they will survive. “That’s really warped thinking. A hungry mob is an angry mob. “You don’t fight cholera by imposing a curfew.” Mwanza says Zambian authorities should use civil and effective measures to deal with the cholera pandemic instead of creating problems out of it. “We have taken away people’s only source of survival without giving them any meaningful alternatives and yet we expect the very people with empty pockets to be buying chlorine, hand sanitisers, clean water and to build decent toilets and drainages to forestall cholera. What irony!!!” Residents of Kanyama are engaged in running battles with police after authorities put up strict measures to contain the outbreak of cholera.
