Police officers who raided opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema’s residence on Monday night have allegedly stolen millions of kwacha, a court document reveals. Hichilema’s lawyers have complained in a court affidavit that money, property and food was stolen in the process of arresting the leading opposition leader. “The police officers who unlawfully invaded the house did not only damage the home and property, but also did steal colossal sums of money in Zambian Kwacha, South African Rands and United States Dollars, as well as shoes, speakers, blankets, carpets and food,†HH’s affidavit read in part. The UPND leader has since been officially arrested and jointly charged with four others on four counts namely; treason, disobedient to lawful orders, disobeying of statutory and use of insulting language contrary to the Laws of Zambia. Those jointly charged with Hichilema are; Lastone Mulilandumba, Muleya Haachenda, Walace Chakwa, Pretornous Haloba, and Hamusonde Hamaleka. Police on Monday night raided Hakainde’s house in New Kasama gassing him out including his wife and children. The police who used force to enter the house beat up all the workers for HH before the official surrendered. He was then bundled into a car and taken to Woodlands police station before being moved to Lilayi Police College where he has been detained since Tuesday afternoon. Police have formally charged opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema with treason and four other charges. Hichilema has been in detention the last 24 hours after police arrested him on Tuesday following the Mongu motorcade incident that saw him refuse to pave way for President Lungu’s entourage. Inspector General of police Kakoma Kanganja told a media briefing at force headquarters today that Hichilema had also been charged with disobeying statutory duty, disobedience of lawful orders and use of insulting language. Treason is a non bailable offence leaving Hichilema firmly behind bars until his case is disposed of. Kanganja told a media briefing that his office had since forwarded the docket to the Attorney General’s chambers for processing. Hichilema is being held at Lilayi Police Training College. On Saturday during the Kuomboka ceremony Hichilema’s motorcade could not move aside to pave way for the Presidential motorcade with the entourage almost bumping him off the road. “I would like to inform the nation that we have jointly charged and arrested Mr Hichilema and five others with: Treason contrary to section 43 (1) (a), disobedient to lawful orders contrary to section 127 of the penal code, disobeying of statutory duty contrary to section 126 of the penal code of the laws of Zambia (rule No. 222 of the High Way Code), and use of insulting language contrary to section 179 of the penal code,†Kanganja said. BELOW IS A STATEMENT FROM PRESIDENT LUNGU PRESIDENT LUNGU MOURNS WITH EGYPT, TERROR VICTIMS LUSAKA, (Tuesday, April 11, 2017) His Excellency Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu President of the Republic of Zambia has extended deepest condolences to His counterpart His Excellency Mr Abdul Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt on the death of about 44 people who were killed in bomb blasts at Tanta and Alexandria Coptic churches on 9th April, 2017. The President in a message of condolences to Mr El-Sisi said he had learnt with a deep sense of sorrow and sadness of the tragic death of about 44 people who were killed in bomb blasts at the two Coptic churches in Egypt.
