Mulenga Sata has resigned from the UPND and re-joined the Patriotic Front where he once served as mayor of Lusaka. Mulenga who is the son of late President Michael Sata immediately declared that he would apply to contest the vacant mayoral position in Lusaka. He was welcomed by party Secretary General Davies Mwila at a press briefing today. Mulenga resigned in the aftermath of a fractious succession wrangle of late President Sata that ushered in President Edgar Lungu. He later crossed over to the UPND where he contested the Kabwata Constituency seat and comprehensively lost. The former Lusaka mayor joins other PF bigwigs that had ditched the party and returned. He described himself as a prodigal son who was returning home. “I wish to publicly declare that I have resigned from the UPND to re-join the mighty PF. I am the prodigal son who has come back home. I was lost, now I am found,†Mulenga said. The PF has been reaching out to former members that had left in the aftermath of President’s Sata’s death with former First Lady Christine Kaseba Sata appointed as ambassador to France. The Ministry of Higher Education has moved swiftly to withdraw bursaries for five students believed to be master minders of the riot last week after a 10-minute power outage. Higher Education Minister Professor Nkandu Luo said that university students would be made to pay for the damage caused to some vehicles. She named the students as Mischeck Kakonda popularly known as Neighbors, Richard Malambo whose moniker is Buffalo, Kellys Chikelwa also known as Chilepule Baby, Muyendwa who is known as Pamukanjo and Muyangwa Lifuke known among students as Mafiki. The above named Students will not be supported and she has assured that all their appeals will not be entertained by UNZA Management. “There are a lot of children out there seeking education who are not being assisted and I would want those students to benefit. And I want to commend UNZA Management for effecting suspension Letters to the named Students,†said Luo. Two other Students at UNZA are being investigated according to Professor Nkandu Luo, to ascertain their involvement in what she says was a premeditated demonstration. Professor Luo said that a woman with a sick child was roughed up in the riot and had her car and several others damaged, a situation she labelled as barbaric not befitting university students. “As Minister of Higher Education, I take this opportunity to apology to the woman, who had a sick child on the material day including all other citizens caught up in the riot,†she said. Professor Luo has toed a hard-line stance on dealing with unruly behaviour of some UNZA students with the union suspended after having identified it as a major source of tension in campus. The opposition UPND says it will hold a peaceful demonstration to protect the attacks on the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) board that has come under fire for their report. And UPND president Hakainde Hichilema says his party is available for the dialogue process as long as it is not under the Zambia Centre for Inter Party Dialogue. Addressing a media briefing at the UPND secretariat, Hichilema urged Zambians to stand in solidarity with FIC on account that they were being persecuted for speaking the truth. Hichilema directed his secretary general Stephen Katuka to notify the police of their intentions to demonstrate in solidarity with FIC. “FIC is a statutory body meaning it is a creation of parliament. It is not Tshuma’s report, it is your report. We in the UPND support 100% the FIC board because they are doing a good job,†he said. He said that his party would invite the ZCID to do clerical work at the dialogue table as they had no capacity to oversee the process. “There is no issue of someone not wanting to meet, we are available but not under ZCID because they have no capacity. I am told they are crying to the church that they want to secretaries, well, be my guest but we will scrutinize those notes,†he said. “We are willing to go to the dialogue table as long as ZCID surrender that role to the church.†Hichilema launched his trademark tirade on the Electoral Commission of Zambia labelling the conduct in Chilanga as disgraceful. The UPND had put up a half-hearted acceptance of the outcome but Hichilema was back on the attack. He accused the PF of being the architects of violence during by-elections. “The PF are the source of violence, they are the brainchild of violence. We are the victims of violence,†he said. Hichilema urged his members to fight back each time they are attacked saying they were tired of being brutalized. He also said that the constitution should be amended to ensure that if a councillor resigned the party that hold the seat should find a replacement without going for an election. Hichilema said that most councillors found it easy to resign as they were only picked as a result of having grade 12 certificates and not on merit.
