President Lungu swore in Justice Mwiinde Siavwapa, Justice Betty Mwaka Majula, and Justice Petronella Chama Mwitwa-Ngulube as Judges of the Court of Appeals today. The Head of State also swore in Justice Conceptor Chinyanwa Zulu as a High Court Judge. “I understand that people have raised concerns with the manner in which the Judiciary has conducted itself. I urge judges to change the bad perception that has been painted over the years. “This can be done if the judges stop socializing with people perceived to be of bad conduct in society and be selective in your contacts,” he said it a brief statement on his social media page. The Mongu Magistrates Court has convicted and sentenced a medical doctor of Luampa Mission Hospital in Western Province identified as Dr Kwalela Kafunya to three years imprisonment for defaming President Edgar Lungu. Dr Kafunya was charged with three counts of Defamation of the President contrary to section 59 Chapter 87, Written Threats to Murder contrary to section 218 chapter 87 and Giving False Information to a Public Officer contrary to section 125 cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia. Facts of the matter are that Dr Kafunya created a fake Facebook account for purposes of bringing the name of the Republican President into ridicule by posting disturbing remarks, insults and digitally altering images of the Republican President with intent to bring his name into disrepute using a facebook account created in the names of another person who is also a medical doctor at the same Hospital. Dr. Kafunya further sent written threats to murder the doctor in whose name the facebook account was created through text messages while in another count the accused gave false Information to a Public Officer of Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe Police Station. For the offences of Defamation of the President and Giving False Information to a Public Officer, Dr Kafunya was sentenced to two years imprisonment for each count while for written threat to murder; he was sentenced to three years. The sentences will run concurrently translating into three years behind bars. “We welcome this judgment and we believe that this conviction will send a strong warning to all those that are in a habit of abusing social media because officers are working round the clock to bring perpetrators to book,” Zambia Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said. Unionised Workers at the Copperbelt University have passed a vote of no confidence in current Vice Chancellor Professor Naison Ngoma for allegedly failing to run the Copperbelt University. And the Workers Wednesday afternoon locked out Professor Ngoma in his office when they requested for his attention but he refused to come out of the office. Speaking on behalf of the three unions at the Copperbelt University, Copperbelt University Academics Union (CBUAU) President Derrick Ntalasha said Prof. Ngoma is not qualified to run the institution. He said workers at the Copperbelt University had sought legal redress which provided that Professor Ngoma was not fit to run the Institution of learning. “He is incompetent. He was briefly sent on leave due failure to manage the University but he came back and it is actually getting worse. We are tired with his dictatorial tendencies and we will not accept this, enough is enough. Salaries have not been paid on time since his appointment as Vice Chancellor.” He added, “management has continued to pay themselves gratuities while workers remain with that salaries. He has continued making trips that are not beneficial to CBU, so we are wondering what kind of a man he is and we don’t want that to continue.†Dr Ntalasha has accused Professor Ngoma of lacking foresight in managing the University as evidenced from the lack of priorities in the utilisation of resources. “For two years the infrastructure is dilapidated, our offices are all leaking. So, as CBU workers we are saying no more Ngoma at CBU and as long as he remains Vice Chancellor we shall not stop our fight until,” he added. After the general meeting with all the unions the worker proceeded to professor Naison Ngoma’s officer where they locked him out after he refused to come out. The workers have vowed not to go back to work when schools resume. The post CBU Vice Chancellor Locked Out; Workers Pass No Confidence Vote appeared first on Zambia Reports.
