The Young African Leaders Network has condemned UPND aligned opposition political parties for urging the international community to suspend aid to Zambia over the incarceration of Hakainde Hichilema. YALI executive director Andrew Ntewewe said that the call to freeze aid to Zambia was selfish and would only hurt ordinary citizens. Ntewewe said that it was irresponsible for anyone to push for the isolation of Zambia on grounds of the arrest and detention of the opposition leader. Hichilema has been detained from April 10 and was last week moved to Mukobeko Maximum prison after the Lusaka Magistrate committed him to the High Court on a treason charge. Ntewewe said the best way to resolve the current political impasse that has the PF on one side and the UPND on the other side. Opposition leaders Nevers Mumba (MMD faction), Charles Milupi (ADD) and Mike Mulongoti (People’s Party) called for the IMF and other donors to withhold aid to Zambia to pressure President Edgar Lungu’s government release Hichilema.
