After failing to make the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, Zambia is back on the road to qualification for the next edition slated for Cameroon in 2019. Coach Wedson Nyirenda begins the journey with virtually the same team that has not ticked since the country won its first continental title in 2012. The 2012 triumph was followed by poor runs at the Africa Cup with Chipolopolo falling out in the first round in subsequent tournaments held in 2013 and 2015. Zambia’s poor showing reached its crescendo when the team failed to qualify for the 2017 edition. Now the Zambians are hopeful they could build on the success of their under-20 which reached the quarterfinals of the 2017 FIFA World Cup. Although no member of the under-20 has made it to the senior national team yet, soccer fans will troop to Ndola where Chipolopolo engage Mozambique hoping for a victorious day. Nyirenda has a variety of options from a team that is built around the likes of skipper Rainford Kalaba, Collins Mbesuma, Stophilla Sunzu and Kennedy Mweene. Nyirenda is confident saying, “We will treat the game with the respect that it requires and the team is ready for battle.” As for skipper Kalaba, the match against Mozambique is moment of redemption for the senior team. “We are hoping for a good start because we did not go to the Afcon last time. This is a new challenge which gives us another chance to go to the Afcon in 2019,” Kalaba is quoted by local media. More pressure on the senior team comes as a result of the under-20’s performance at the World Cup. “There is a lot of pressure on us because of the under-20 national team. The senior national team is receiving a lot of criticism so the only thing we can do for our country is to win on Saturday. We want to remind our fans that we are the same team which won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012,” Kalaba added. Zambia must win the opening fixture to start the qualification race on a good note. Chipolopolo is in Group K with Mozambique, Guinea Bissau and Namibia. The post Mbesuma, Kalaba Lead Zambia’s AfCON 2019 Redemption Bid appeared first on Zambia Reports.

The Lusaka High Court will on Monday hear incarcerated UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema’s petition asking it to quash his unlawful arrest. High Court judge Betty Mungo’mba will hear Hichilema and the Attorney General pending determination of the petition on Monday. And the Constitutional Court has set June 15 as date of hearing the petition in which Hichilema and his five co-accused asked it to strike out provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code which forbids those accused of committing capital offenses like treason and murder from getting bail. Last Monday, Hichilema, who has been behind bars for two months now, filed two separate petitions in the High Court and ConCourt, asking them to severe provisions of the law which bar courts from granting bail to suspects charged with murder, treason, aggravated robbery and other capital offenses. Hichilema is also seeking monetary compensation for unlawful arrest. The post Hichilema’s First High Court Attempt Set For Monday appeared first on Zambia Reports.
