Minister of National Planning Lucky Mulusa and his team have identified Ngabwe in Central Province as the new site for the country’s new capital city. Mulusa has announced that a proposal to select Ngabwe as the new capital city is ready and will be submitted to Cabinet for consideration. When appointed as minister, Mulusa embarked on a strategy to establish future plans that will help decongest Lusaka. Lusaka has over the years grown with its population increasing at a fast pace over the years. According to the last census, the population in one of southern Africa’s fast growing states was estimated at 1.8 million people. Experts say the population in Lusaka has grown to over 2.5 million and is soon to breach the 3 million mark. Mulusa says there was no proper planning for Lusaka to hold its current population. He said says the Ministry of National Planning was going to present to Cabinet a request to go ahead and do feasibility studies of the new capital city. Mulusa says his ministry had devised a plan to come up with a new capital city that would be able to compete with other African cities. “When you look at Lusaka in the next 10 years, the city will not be able to sustain us. The rate at which commerce and industry and official activities are growing cannot be met with Lusaka’s ability to grow its capacity. “Human settlement on its own is a problem and that is why my ministry is proposing that we start up a completely new capital city that will be planned on the modern principles of sustainable development,†he said. Mulusa said Ngabwe, west of Kabwe, was an ideal location for the capital city of Zambia because it was more central than Lusaka and it was easier to start building a city from scratch. The absence of United Party for National Development (UPND) vice president Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba in the trials and tribulations of his president Hakainde Hichilema has continued to raise eyebrows. Bwalya, better known as GBM, has been conspicuously missing from the frontline at Hichilema’s treason case court appearances. GBM has not been known to shy away from the political limelight but has continuously vanished from the scene letting political observers and UPND followers speculate about what he has been up to. Last week he issued a half-hearted statement pledging total loyalty to the incarcerated Hichilema who has been detained since April 11 on the non bailable charge of treason. Hichilema will be appearing in court today on his 45th day in prison while reports are rife GBM is on the run seeking political asylum. But UPND national chairperson Mutale Nalumanga has defended GBM’s absence at court or public life saying its “none of your business.” Speaking on Muvi TV, Nalumango said the party found it strange that the ruling Patriotic Front was peddling propaganda that GBM was seeking asylum outside the country. She said the party was intact despite being disappointed with the continued incarceration of its leader. “We think that Hakainde has been detained politically – there is no legal issue! There is a political issue. I was talking to a very senior PF lawyer who said that ‘the problem is that there is political treason and legal treason and this is a political treason and because it is political, it is very difficult to even draw a line as to who is innocent,†said Nalumango. GBM has not been in the limelight from the day a video of him at Hichilema’s residence on the night of the raid was released. A Zambian civil society organisation has called for the abolishing of the long-held tradition of bride price arguing that it had been culturally used to put women in bondage. NGOCC chairperson Sarah Longwe has attributed the increase in Gender Based Violence to lobola claiming it was used to force early marriages. She said it was disheartening to note that even tribes that previously never charged lobola had started demanding for money just for financial gain. Longwe lamented that society had started viewing girls and women as commodities that they could sell for profit. “Society has started viewing women and girls as goats, chickens and cows that they can easily exchange with money,†she said. Longwe said it was unfortunate to see young girls being forced into marriages where they are raped everyday and later die during child birth because their body had not matured enough for child bearing. She said a number of women were being unjustly treated because men boasted having bought them and that they had a right to treat them in the manner they wanted. Longwe said if lobola was abolished, women could decide to have protective sex or the number of children they want. “When lobola is paid, love ceases to exist since a woman is turned into a slave,†claimed Longwe said. Longwe said lobola was introduced by ancestors and worked well in their time but now it was exploiting and working against women in this generation. “Let lobola be abolished just as we abolished the practice of sexual cleansing and other bad practices in order to safeguard women,” she said. Longwe said if a country wanted to really achieve gender equality, vices such as lobola should be done away with as it was promoting gender inequality.
