Five Zambian provinces have gone nearly a week without power forcing opposition United Party for National Development, UPND, leader Hakainde Hichilema to summon what he termed an emergency “press conference” at which he demanded a thorough explanation. Eastern, Muchinga, Northern, Luapula and Central Provinces have been under total darkness for five days with a water crisis also crippling operations in the five provinces. The only explanation Zesco has given is a situation to do with lightening striking their installations that supply the affected areas. Hichilema is not too pleased with the situation “We are receiving numerous complaints from a lot of our people in various parts of the country, particularly Eastern, Muchinga, Northern, Luapula and parts of Central Provinces regarding the unprecedented powercuts that we hear started from Friday last week. “This is not a matter that needs to be politicised as people’s lives are in danger as we understand that water utility companies in these areas have now been severely affected and are unable to pump water,” he stated. Hichilema says the situation should have been declared national disaster needing urgent attention. “We wonder how our hospitals and clinics in these areas are coping with, but we can only hope that resources have been channeled to these affected areas and alleviate the problems, especially the provision of safe and clean drinking water, standby generators and fuel so that we don’t lose lives in these affected,” he says. Hichilema says there is a need to seriously overhaul the operations of the power utility company, which is heavily politicised and has led high levels of incompetence. “It is on record that ZESCO received the biggest share of the borrowed Euro Bond money that was meant to upgrade it’s operations through procurement of quality equipment, but to date, they cannot account for the money. “We have always emphasised on the need to channel resources towards the improvement of power generation equipment and investment in other sources of energy to reduce the current increased loadshedding in the country which has affected production and doing business at all levels, especially the small scale. “We challenge those who are clinging onto power to immediately dispatch teams of experts to the affected areas and channel resources to help our people other than globe trotting and earning huge allowances when the masses are suffering.” The post Five Zambian Provinces Go Nearly One Week ‘Power-less’ appeared first on Zambia Reports.

Michael Kaingu had his petition thrown out by the Livingstone High Court after he sought to overturn the election of the UPND’s Sililo Mutaba. Kaingu, who contested the election on PF ticket, had petitioned the election of Mutaba citing irregularities but had his petition overthrown for lack of merit. The courts have delivered mixed results across political parties and independents in the last few days. Meanwhile, Margaret Mwanakatwe’s lawyers KBF PARTNERS say they will seek a stay of execution of the Judgement and appeal the Judgement. This followed the successful petition of her Lusaka Central seat by UPND candidate Charlotte Scott. Judge Mwiinde Siavwapa cited electoral malpractices, use of violence, use of government resources, corrupt practices and use of racist remarks by Mrs Margaret Mwanakatwe as reasons for the nullification of the seat. Charlotte is wife to former Vice President Guy Scott. Below are some grounds of nullification stated by Judge Siavwapa: Extracts of judgement below: Judge Mwiinde Siavwapa In no way does it mean first respondent is a racist but I believe remarks were used for political reasons On racial remarks it is clear that the target of remarks was the petitioner and has been proved. In allegations that Zambia Police breached act even though no evidence of reports made to police he will accept the Petitioner’s credibility on actions of police and thus allegation stands proved On the allegation of campaigning on polling day at LCC library the culprits were not identified and has not been proved and I therfore dismiss it there is no way those supporters could have upnd and must have been PF which the first respondent admitted to when she said they must have been PF but not directed by me in her cross examination On allegation of violence by her supporters in town center, it has been proved On borehole given the facts that the dates boreholes were sank was within the campaign period and she took advantage of this to endear herself to voters. Even if letter requesting for boreholes was done two months before campaign period, it did not change the fact that she had them sank during campaign period. Allegation proved On cash donation to church. There is no dispute on this. And the video evidence shows she gave money. The only issues is when it was done. Donation was made as a way of inducing voters as was made two days before campaign period. On use of government resources the 1st respondent admitted that she used the government pool vehicle with a flag and she introduced herself as minister on race to manda Hill program which was a campaign activity. She had greater leverage and thus allegation proved. On buying of chitenges the fact that she bought chitenges in full view of the congregants it was meant to induce and not for purposes of philanthropy. Proved In conclusion the 1st respondent was not validly elected. I declare election void The post Kaingu’s Petition Tossed Out; Mwanakatwe Appeals appeared first on Zambia Reports.
