The Non-Governmental Organizing Coordinating Council (NGOCC) must stop inciting the public to rise against the government by irresponsibly declaring that high levels of hunger in Zambia are a result of government’s decision to continue wasting money on unproductive projects. In an interview with the Mast Newspaper, the NGOCC board chairperson Sara Longwe was partisan and quick to blame the government on the poor economy. She however fall short to mention any of the alleged unproductive projects. The government alone cannot grow the economy. The major economic responsibility of the government is to create an enabling environment for both local businesses and foreign investment, not running businesses. However, real economic growth can be achieved through entrepreneurship and public-private partnership. The current economic woes in the country were caused by both internal and external factors. Of course poor fiscal management and a lack of economic planning contribute to poor economy but in Zambia, the major cause is the plummeting copper prices on the global market. For main years Zambia had relied on copper as a source of foreign currency. What NGOCC must talk about is the diversification of the economy and not the partisan rhetoric and blaming the government even in areas of the economy where it is performing exemplary such as the construction of roads and new universities. The PF government is on the right economic trajectory through its infrastructural development program. However, such projects require large investment but the benefits will be realized in a long term. NGOCC must stop misleading the nation especially youths and women who are the most marginalized in society but instead preach hard-work and innovation. NGOCC must exert some of its energies on encouraging civil society to propagate the importance of self-reliance and entrepreneurship. This is what Zambia needs to alleviate poverty.
