In the aftermath of the 1-all draw against Cameroun, BBC Sports journalist Kennedy Gondwe has penned some reflections on the direction Zambian football should take. The respected scribe reckons the Chipolopolo should have their eyes on building a team to aim for Qatar 2022 whilst allowing the team to enjoy the run in the race for Russia 2018. Below is Gondwe’s full posting on his facebook page: Whilst watching the Cameroon versus Zambia World Cup qualifying match yesterday, Gary Al-Smith, a good sports journalist friend from Ghana remarked on Twitter, “Collins Mbesuma has been scoring goals before I started wearing diapers. And he will continue after my kids are done with uni [university]…†Such remarks show how dedicated Mbesuma has been to national duty though at his peak, his exploits on the field were punctuated with similar but toxic acts off it until ‘King David’ looked to Jehovah God to restore him and in the process rediscover his form. The only thing God cannot do now is to make him younger and run as much as he used to before he reached his 30s. His legs are still potent though and industrious enough to score—goals I mean—but not for long. That Zambia still looks up to him as their Redeemer-in-Chief in the World Cup qualifying campaign explains how much the country needs new strikers before the former Roan United man finally hangs up his boots and possibly join Chishimba Kambwili in Roan constituency. Like I have previously argued, qualification for Russia 2018 went when the draw was made. Our current team has seen better days. And the five points difference between Zambia and group toppers Nigeria is too much to overhaul. But we live in a world of possibilities were even Donald Trump can be President and Temitope Balogun (TB) Joshua can be messed up by his predictions, sorry, prophesies. Focus should now, or rather should have been, going to Qatar in 2022. What the senior national team needs now is not necessarily a root-and-branch overhaul but something close to it. A team that relies on 30 year-olds (Mbesuma, Kondwani Mtonga, Kennedy Mweene, Isaac Chansa and possibly others who have under-declared [note: I don’t mean tickets sales money] but football ages) should now look up to its youth ranks as the future. That is why since Zambia’s next game is close to a year after now, coach Wedson Nyirenda should be attached to the Under-20 coaching bench and start identifying future stars. Zambia finishing among the top four teams in the Under-20 Africa Youth Cup tournament they are hosting next year will guarantee qualification to the Under-20 World Cup. And if that happens, one or two players may end up playing in Europe. And that team should be allowed to graduate into the Under-23 side whose target should be qualification for the All-Africa Games and the Olympics in 2020. That’s the team whose overall target should be going to the 2019 Africa Cup and Qatar in 2022 and I am sure the likes of Rainford Kalaba, Nathan Sinkala, Stopilla Sunzu will still be competitive in a way and provide leadership. And who knows, we shall be seeing less of Chisamba Lungu’s shoe-shine football, Evans Kangwa and Rodger Kola would have become a lot more serious in national colours by then and not the pain they were yesterday. In between, there will be Africa Cup matches and also youth tournaments so these players would have a lot of matches to gel and play coherently. All in all, coach Wedson Nyirenda and his team should be supported. The man has something in his sky-blue jacket, touchline antics and barks. The passion is there for even Elijah Ngwale to see. Though just a draw in yesterday’s match, it’s an important point for belief. The team played as a united force. Ziyo Tembo gave us an idea of what defence partnership Nyirenda has fathered and how he could already be looking to the future once he sorts out the other equally important departments of the team… The post Analysis: BBC Journalist Reflects On Zambia’s 1-All Draw Against Cameroun appeared first on Zambia Reports.

Veteran politician Vernon Mwaanga has not let up on his post-election grievances taking shots at the Constitutional Court. Mwaanga, who backed losing United Party for National Development candidate Hakainde Hichilema, says the Constitutional Court should be disbanded. He said the court that threw out the petition was comprised of incompetent judges that should be hounded out. Mwaanga said the Constitutional Court had failed the people of Zambia and had yet to make any credible decision. He said that the court was such a circus that they were even re-adjudicating matters that they had already ruled upon like the issue of ministers refunding the government money they used after parliament had been dissolved. Mwaanga found favour with the UPND, a party that over the years had accused him of being the master rigger of elections but are now shunted in the same boat. The UPND long held the notion that Mwaanga helped ‘rob’ the late Anderson Mazoka of victory in 2001 when Levy Mwanawasa emerged winner.
