Chief Justice Ireen Mambilima lamented the incessant attacks on the judiciary saying that it was unfortunate that the institution could not respond to the accusations. And Mambilima has poured cold water on any impropriety on the Zambia/Malawi maize scandal saying the allegations raised by United Progressive Party leader Saviour Chishimba lacked merit. Mambilima said the judiciary could not respond to attacks but only spoke through judgments. “We do not respond to attacks, we only speak through the law, through judgements,†she said. Mambilima said that the judiciary never received any instructions from anybody to arrive at decisions. “Nobody tells us what to do, we make decisions according to the law,†she said. Mambilima said that she could not appoint tribunals every time people complained. “I do not just appoint a tribunal every time I get a complaint. If I appointed a tribunal whenever I got a complaint we would have a tribunal every month,†she said. Mambilima also stood up to allegations that she had failed to intervene in the Constitutional Court failing to adjudicate on the contested presidential petition that was thrown out. She said that there was nothing she could do as she was not a member of the Constitutional Court. The post Chief Justice Decries Attacks On Judiciary appeared first on Zambia Reports.
