Patriotic Front Deputy General Secretary Mumbi Phiri has taken issue with South African opposition political parties that have condemned the arrest of UPND president Hakainde Hichilema. Phiri has advised Mmusi Maimane’s Democratic Alliance (DA) and Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to acquaint themselves with the background to Hichilema’s troubles with the law. Hichilema is locked away on charges of treason that he argues are politically motivated. The EFF and DA have issued stinging statements condemning the incarceration of Hichilema and called for his release. BELOW IS MUMBI PHIRI’s statement: THE PATRIOTIC FRONT DEPUTY GENERAL SECRETARY ADOPTS ANC YOUTH LEAGUE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE MEMBER COMRADE SIFISO MSTWENI’S STATEMENT AS SHE ADVISES THE SOUTH AFRICAN OPPOSITION DA AND EFF AGAINST ILL-ADVISED COMMENTS ON ISSUES BEFORE THE ZAMBIAN COURTS The Patriotic Front is disappointed by the South African DA and EFF Party’s inability to comprehend how the Zambian justice system works before issuing out unpalatable remarks against Zambia’s duly elected President His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu. As a party we are perturbed at how the DA and EFF have allowed themselves to be toiled by the whims of a disgruntled opposition who want to undermine the will of the Zambian people. The Opposition UPND has shown recklessness in their failure to explain simple civics to their opposition counterparts in South Africa. The opposition UPND are power hungry perpetual failures whose appetite for unlawful behaviour has been condemned by a cross section of civil society, traditional leaders, Church leaders and Zambians at large. Let me also place on record that I have adopted ANC Youth League National Executive Member Sifiso Mtsweni as my own, and thank him for his support to Mother Zambia. Reactionary forces from other countries aligned to Opposition UPND are misrepresenting Zambia. Sadly we have thugs masquerading as leaders of a named Opposition Party, which seeks to see anarchy in Zambia to the extent of seeking to collide with the Presidential motorcade. Every meaningful friend of Zambia must condemn such provocative, barbaric and thuggish acts! The Patriotic Front on the other hand is a duly elected, law abiding, unifying political party that enjoys massive support from the Zambian people. Our people respects the rule of law and wishes to commend His Excellency the President of Zambia Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu for defending the rule of law by not interfering in Court Cases. Attempts by the Opposition UPND and their misguided allies across the borders are an exercise in futility. We strongly advise the DA and EFF to take a cue from the various reputable international bodies that monitored the Zambian elections and deemed them free and fair. They must also learn from credible international institutions such as the British High Commissioner Fergus Cochrane Dyet who condemned the provocative nature of HH and his minions in Mongu where they shamelessly attempted to undermine the Zambian government. Let me commend the civil society, the international organisations and foreign Governments that have rendered solidarity to his Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu. I would like to lastly want to announce that the Party will also write to former Copperbelt Minister Hon Mwenya Musenge to show cause why he should not be disciplined by the Party for his unwarranted statements in the media, considering that he is a senior member of the party familiar with the channels of communication. That former Africa Boxing Union (ABU) heavyweight champion Joseph ‘No Pressure’ Chingangu got convicted of house breaking last week by the Lusaka Magistrate Court is a great shame to the Zambian sports fraternity. The man who in heady days sized up against some of the biggest boxing stars like Vladmir Klitchko now only remains a virtual statistic of fallen sports stars. At the height of his boxing career briefly stayed in the USA and fought Heavyweight Champion Vladimir Klitschko in 1990 and lost. Chingangu had for years dazzled audiences with his fists of fury but after having flown so high the former boxer found himself regularly at variance with the law. Chingangu had before his final fall from grace flirted with crime having been entangled in a motor vehicle theft case and also got pummelled to pulp by University of Zambia students stealing laptops. He became a subject of ridicule on social media forums. But then what could have gone wrong with the once upon a time giant that felled opponents for fun. His case should provide a learning point for our sports personalities. It is not in dispute that at one point in his career Chingangu earned some decent monies. Unfortunately the brother was one to liberally blow it all up without any real investments. Even later efforts in his career by Anthony Mwamba’s Exodus Boxing promotion stables and Chris Malunga’s Oriental Quarries boxing stable to squeeze him on their high profile fights did not help the brother use up his last pay checks wisely. Now Chingangu has to do time behind bars for six months but that is not the most tragic bit about this episode as the brother could just be getting hardened for more sinister acts once he is out. He has had one too many brushes with the law to be optimistic about him giving up his criminal antics. Sports personalities across all disciplines should learn from Chingangu’s fall from grace and invest whilst they still can. The ghost of his political tormentor in chief was out to haunt President Edgar Lungu even as he officiated at the Labour Day celebrations in Lusaka. President Lungu had set out on a smooth trajectory but found himself side tracked as he talked about his incarcerated opponent UPND’s Hakainde Hichilema urging the people that were calling on him to be tolerant to also extend their demands to the opposition leader. “Everyone who wants to comment on this subject wants to tell me to be tolerant but the other partners in the game are not being told to be tolerant. I will be very happy if the people who are calling for peace in Zambia can find time to talk to all the stakeholders in political activities to also behave and respect others [and] that way we’ll get somewhere,†said President Lungu. There is room for dialogue, room for dialogue in this case, you just accept the results and wait for 2021. Not to say ‘no, there is tension in the country.†He added: “Social dialogue is important; this applies to even politicians who talk about political tensions in the country. If only there was dialogue in the political arena, we would be more at peace than we are. This is because people think that by telling me to be reasonable, to dialogue, to be tolerant; we will get somewhere like that. We cannot get somewhere like that, tell the other guy also.†And President Lungu said the increase in electricity tariffs was inevitable. The Head of State said that he would not bow to political pressure and veto the proposed increase as it had become necessary. “There is need for us to increase electricity tariffs. It is a painful decision but we have to take it. Otherwise our economy will totally collapse. There will be no jobs to protect [and] there will be no economy to talk about. I will ensure that this is done; we just have to agree on the modality. But to say we cannot increase the electricity tariff,†he said.
