Editor, LET GEORGE CHELLAH SPEAK The attacks on George Chellah after he spoke about the need to resolve the current political crisis are unwarranted. George Chellah is a bona fide Zambian citizen and therefore, has constitutional rights to air his views on matters of national importance. It is a fact that Zambia today is a deeply divided nation and the levels of political tension have reached fever pitch. It is therefore the duty of every Zambian who is able to work towards reducing the dangerous levels of tension and ensure that healing takes place and unity is restored in our mother land. As a person who was an ultimate insider, owing to his work as Presidential Spokesman, George has a unique perspective on how government works. George also understands the consequences of divisions and unrestrained tension to our country. It is for the above reasons that the powers that be should heed George Chellah’s advice before it is too late. The colossal amounts of money that our Members of Parliament are raking in terms of allowances, salaries, gratuity, upkeep and other benefits is a pure case of institutionalized theft. It’s highway robbery. This is what your MPs get for dozing or shouting “Hear Hear Hear” in the House: Sitting allowance: K3, 000 per sitting. Multiply that by 4 sittings per week, it comes to K12, 000 per month per MP. And if an MP sits in two committees he walks away with K9, 000 per day. So in a month, one MP gets a whooping K48, 000 in allowances alone. Add a Salary of about K31, 000 to that, plus Accommodation allowance which is calculated at K500 per day plus upkeep allowance, plus tax free beer and food, the total amount we are spending to service one MP comes to a gigantic K100, 000 per month. Forget about the tax-free vehicle, traveling allowances, plus a staggering gratuity of about K500, 000 after five years of dozing and shouting “Hear Hear Hear!!!” In short we are spending over K250, 000, 000 per annum feting our MPs. Preposterous!!! What about Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Constitution Office Holders. Simply put, the poor are working for the politicians. Now check those amounts and look at the state of the constituencies these same MPs come from, look at the poverty of their people. How much does a qualified teacher, lecturer, nurse, police officer gets for serving the community? Masese. The minimum qualification for being an MP is G12 or a certificate in Knitting, Photocopying and Binding, Plumbing etc but the minimum salary of an MP is K100, 000 per month. How? Why? This COMMERCIALISATION of our politics has largely contributed to the dirt in our politics. People are ready to kill, steal, fight just to be in power or to hold on to power because of the lucrative nature of our politics. Our politics is no longer about service, it’s about money, deals, corruption and all sorts of negativity in man at the expense of the poor. This must change if we ever have to achieve sanity, decency and service to mankind. We need an independent Commission of Emoluments to calculate and peg the emoluments of MPs, Ministers and all Constitutional Office Holders to stopped. This is legalised theft and it should be stopped. It’s immoral. It does not matter who is MP, you or me. it is simply immoral. We need to revise and normalise these salaries and allowances. We cannot be working and paying taxes just to feed a handful of politicians. We are spending a bulk of our national budget paying salaries and allowamces to a few individuals leaving little or nothing for production and development. As long as we continue to expend most of our budgetary allocation on consumption and not production, Zambia will continue to wallow in poverty and destitution. The MMD Die hard Youth Wing has told former Lusaka Province MMD Chairperson William Banda to stop commenting on the political situation of the country because he has shown that he is a bad political advisor. William Banda is quoted in some sections of the media as having said that former Republican President Rupiah Banda should stop involving himself with the current political situation in the country but MMD Die Hard Youths National Coordinator Gerald Chiluba said William Banda reserved no rights to comment on what is happening in the country. Chiluba said it is the likes of William Banda who are wrongly advising their leader Hakainde Hichilema that he is facing treason charges in the courts of law today. He said it was shocking that the former President was being attacked for sharing his opinion on the political tension in the country. “We are shocked with the recent attacks on the former Head of State Rupiah Bwezani Banda over his recent comment with regard to the state of political affairs in our country. President Banda was only trying to give his honest opinion on the perceived political tension which is expected of the former Head of state like elsewhere in the world. “William Banda reserves no moral right to drag the former president into their dirty politics. Infact he should have been the one to have been advising the UPND on the best practices of democractic politics because he had learnt from the best of politicians,” he said. He added “The records of the former Head of State are very clear, he freely gave up power without hesitation because the ECZ had announced that he had lost, which the UPND are failing to do due to political advisers like him who claim to have ideas about politics and yet they know nothing, that’s why HH is going through what he is going through today because of such characters who have continued to mislead and misadvise him.” Chiluba further called on politicians to stop the habit of disrespecting the office of the former Head of State because there is much more that Zambia as a nation can learn from the said office. He said MMD like UNIP share a proud record of peacefully handing over power when they lost something he said William Banda should inculcate in the UPND leadership. “We want to take this opportunity to appeal to politicians not to rob the integrity which as been bestowed on our former Head of States as we have much more to learn from their weaknesses and strengths they possessed while in government. Let us hold them in high esteem like the Mandela’s and kwame Nkrumah’s. “Just like UNIP in 1991, we conceded defeat in 2011 and peacefully handed over power, that is the record that every Zambian has and former President Banda is globally celebrated for that display of Statesmanship and democracy. we expect William having learnt from best practices to inculcate the same spirit of democracy and respect for the will of the people in his party UPND, we want to encourage the UPND to be careful with individuals like him because It is such behaviour that makes one continuing to lose elections,” he said.
